Brand Introduction
Founded in 1916, Baba Hamono has been deeply rooted in Sakai City — the birthplace of Japan’s 600-year-old forged blade tradition.
The company has always upheld the highest standards of craftsmanship to produce exceptional blades.
Their process embodies harmony and trust between artisans: the blacksmith forges the steel, while the sharpener carefully polishes the edge — a hallmark of Baba Hamono’s signature craftsmanship.
Forging:
The blacksmith fuses steel and iron at over 1000°C, performing a sequence of processes such as “hot welding,” “forging,” “center trimming,” “rough shaping,” “grinding,” and “heat treatment.”
Sharpening:
Unlike the fire-focused forging work, the sharpener’s craft centers around water. Using various whetstones, they perform careful grinding and polishing, adjusting even the smallest distortions to ensure perfect edge geometry.
Handle Fitting:
After marking the blade, the craftsman fits the handle precisely, ensuring no misalignment, then performs final polishing to bring out peak sharpness and cutting balance.
Material Introduction
Aogami #1 (Blue Steel #1) contains more carbon than Aogami #2, resulting in higher hardness and exceptional sharpness. It is reactive (will rust) and challenging to sharpen, making it a high-end steel preferred by advanced users.
Knife Model Introduction
The Sakimaru Takohiki is a traditional Japanese knife primarily used for slicing fish, especially for sushi and sashimi preparation.
It combines features of two classical Japanese knife types — Sakimaru (tapered tip) and Takohiki (straight-edged long blade).
Its unique design makes it ideal for delicate, precise slicing of ultra-thin fish fillets.
